When you open the case, you'll notice immediately the nice friction hinge is further reinforced. This allows you to pop the case on the desk with the buds open, use one bud in single mode and leave one in the case for it to charge. Getting the buds out of the case is a bit awkward at times, as you only have a small area to grip onto. Again, it is pretty good considering the form factor and other constraints – good enough for most, but don’t choose purely on the basis of call performance. As with the Air3 and Sonic Pro, the Mini Pro feel like a complement to the portfolio rather than a replacement. For me, though, they fill a gap which the T2 failed to – a button-shaped TWS, with ANC, decent fit and enough functions to satisfy most users.

Battery life on the Mini Pro is a big step up from the original from a single use perspective. With ANC off, I would regularly get over the 7 hours advertised on both IOS and Android. However, with ANC on it’s a different story – if you’re taking a lot of calls, it’s possible to drop as low as 4-4.5 hours. Now this is still pretty good as far as ANC buds go, but make sure you read the print, and use ANC when you need it – it’s easy enough to toggle on and off, so don’t waste battery unnecessarily. Whilst the cases look very similar, this cannot be said about the buds themselves. Sure, the logo is still on the outside (although now it is a dominant silver colour, as opposed to timid grey) with a similarly-sized touch control area, but the fit is completely re-invented.The app has actually removed some of the features you get with the Air3 Deluxe HS, including 'Adaptive EQ'. This allowed you to put your ears through a hearing test of various different frequency bleeps before serving you with an EQ setting customised for your hearing. For whatever reason, this beta feature is not available with the Mini Pro HS. Otherwise, it is a familiar experience, with the front side of the case accented in grey – more akin to their recent H2 release. The key features are, as always, listed on the rear – here it is hybrid ANC and aptX-adaptive support. Specifications are listed on the side. The manual is no different to previous iterations, with instructions listed in English, French, German, Spanish, Italian, Chinese and Japanese. The Mini Pro HS produces an abundance of bass, enough to satisfy even the most ardent bassheads. It’s also of good quality, powerful and controlled. However, if you prefer a more neutral bass, you can customize it to your preference via the SoundPEATS phone app.

IPX5 rated. Would prefer IPX7 but that's hard to get with ANC. They seem to do just fine with a mild sweat. 7/10

Crafted Hybrid ANC for Commuting

Featured with 10mm bio-diaphragm drivers and aptX-Adaptive decoding technology, Mini Pro automatically recognizes different scenes and determines the best operating mode (low-latency mode, high-bit rate mode, low-bit rate mode) to restore every detail of the sound. Despite the fullness of the bass, the Mini Pro HS midrange is clear and articulate, with male and female vocals coming through with excellent clarity and detail. The midrange tone is overall neutral, and the resolution and instrument separation is above average for TWS earbuds in this price range. The left and right imaging is also well-handled. Even so, the Mini Pro perform well indoors, booming your voice through pretty clearly. However, loud nearby chatter will be audible to the recipient of your call, it’s just your voice will be elevated. Increase the ambient sound and it struggles far more, and this is especially the case outdoors, where at times your voice will muddy into the competing frequencies around you.

This area was one of the bigger let downs. The earbuds are made of a kind of hard plastic material. There are a few 'edges' on the earbuds as well. Not sharp or anything, but just pointy enough when combined with the hard plastic to not be that comfortable. The eartips that come with these are also kind of cheap. Many have recommended changing out the eartips, and I would tend to agree except I don't think you should have to do that. Any manufacturer worth their salt should pony up a couple more dollars to give you some decent eartips and if they can't be bothered to do so, you should probably buy a different product. SoundPEATS have seemingly taken every weakness from the original case and improved it. Now, the case material is supported by an additional protective layer. If you’ve ever handled the Elevoc Clear case, you’ll know what I mean – it feels almost rubberised, and this adds a degree of resistance to scratches – always a minefield with matte finish cases. For commuting, you will find stronger ANC buds on the market for sure, but at this price point they fare very well, competing with the likes of the Earfun Free Pro and Omthing Airfree 2. Whilst some stem-based buds do tend to perform better, due in no small part to being able to use 4 ambient mics for wave inversion, it should be remembered the Mini Pro don’t have that luxury due to their button design, and considering they don’t invade the ear canal, it’s a good balance of sound reduction and comfort. If ANC is your only criteria, the Mini will not jump out at you - they are all-rounders, with ANC a nice add-on, rather than their raison-d'être. Whilst resolution is good, and certainly an improvement on the original, I didn't feel like the Mini Pro HS dazzled me with its technicalities in the way the Deluxe HS did, but perhaps given it is an in-ear bud, maybe my expectations are a little too high. Even so, it is one of the better sounding earbuds at its price, and the improvements show how far SoundPEATS and wireless earbuds at this price in general have come. Comparing this to the competition, it falls some way short of something like the more expensive Soundcore Space A40, which does support fast charging and gives you around an hour extra across all of those different modes. By the same token, compared with the Huawei FreeBuds Pro 2, longevity is much better, offering around 30-45 additional minutes.
