HDR also has a color character that reminds us of the earlier 2013-2015 days of phone HDR, sometimes leading to unnatural-looking tonality and a slight flattening of contrast. However, this can be fixed in video editing software. Insta360’s own software offers a couple of color and clarity boosting options. I haven’t noticed any ghosting in Active HDR, though, which is the classic issue of HDR video where combined frames are shot sequentially, leading to “afterimage” doubling of moving subjects. Editing on the smartphone app is easy and convenient. However, saving or uploading the edited video to social media can take hours.

A new voice control algorithm makes it easier to control the X3 when your camera is mounted out of reach. If you want to impress your friends with a slow-motion jump whip, you can set your X3 to 3K at 100fps, or you might just have a slow-motion recording of a yard sale.

Because the X3 can be instantly woken up by the GPS remote, or the phone app when you choose the X3 Bluetooth wakeup, you can record or take photos without waiting for the X3 startup routine. We found the process fastest on a laptop, as mouse control just feels that bit more precise than on a phone-size touchscreen. 360-degree edited clips are set at 1080p when exporting from the phone app or Insta360 Studio, which may seem too limited when maximum res is 5.7K. However, we saw little obvious benefit after manually changing this to 4K resolution in the desktop Insta360 Studio software. And if you’re looking to produce remotely normal-looking videos, you’re not going to be using all of that raw 5.7K information anyway. As long as the redesigned and removable USB-C port door is closed, the X3 is waterproof to 30 feet. The new Action GPS Remote is waterproof to 15 feet when the rubber cap is secured over its USB-C port. First, the X3 now has larger 1/2-inch sensors. These are still smaller than the 1-inch sensors in the Insta360 ONE RS 1-inch 360 camera, but that’s a larger and more expensive model. The new 1/2-inch sensors in the X3 are a significant step up from those in the ONE X2 before it. When I am shooting high-resolution photos or short videos intermittently on a ride, I can get about five hours of battery life by using the Action Camera Remote to turn on, record, stop recording, and letting it sleep. The Insta 360 X3 records continuously for about 70 minutes on the battery alone and recharges in about 90 minutes.

Like most Insta360 launches, we’ve also come across a few bugs. It has frozen on a few occasions, and one low-light mode clip was rendered unreadable for some reason. However, these mostly cropped up when handling footage after a shoot, not actually during capture. I am primarily a local weekend adventure rider with occasional long-distance trips who enjoys documenting the highlights of my adventures on the Ultimate Motorcycling Yamaha Ténéré 700 Project Bike. Insta360’s editing tools are fun and fairly easy to use as well. We tried both the phone app and Insta360 Studio on Mac for this review, and their tool sets are largely similar. You do need to manually max out the brightness to make it hold up in bright sunlight, but it gets roughly as bright as the GoPro Max’s own. The large screen is better for previewing the picture than the last gen model, and makes navigating around the menu system easier. Its interface also just looks a lot glossier and more high-end. After testing, phones equipped with Qualcomm SDM765 5G chips have poor hardware decoding capabilities and are not supported for use, such as OPPO Reno 3 5G.To add interest to your videos, you can add an overlay of your speed, slope, route, and exact GPS coordinates. You will have to record the video when connected to the Android or iPhone app, or the Action GPS Remote. The Action GPS Remote utilizes the American GPS, China’s BeiDou, and the Russian GLONASS global satellite navigation systems to provide an accurate GPS data overlay for your videos on any continent. The X3 has had some physical upgrades too. The most obvious is the larger 2.9-inch touchscreen display, and if you think the memory card and battery door is harder to open than normal, that’s because the camera has now been waterproofed to a depth of 10m/33ft.
