Peter's narrative voice is as fun as always, there's the potential for comedy and drama in the promised arrival of a baby Brook, and I'm glad that the Chorley storyline has been wrapped up (he couldn't go on doing Spectacularly Evil Stuff indefinitely without being omnipotent and/or making the Folly team seem incompetent.) I had a lot of feelings about Leslie May. I could have done without all the Dark Ages references, but at least Peter was very insistent on the fact that King Arthur is a mythical figure and the invention of Geoffrey of Monmouth. (I honestly would read at least a novella's worth of Peter Grant talking critical source analysis of medieval texts, especially if it works in as many Discworld references along the way as Lies Sleeping does.)
The best part of this installment for me is easily the addition of Foxglove to the cast of characters, and the single best moment is when Peter brings her to the Folly and she sees Molly and they run toward each other. We only cite reputable sources when researching our guides and articles. A race of intelligent reptiles comes up in "The Mound", which he ghost-wrote, as an enemy of the subterranean Kn'yan. "The Nameless City" has croc-like reptile men, as an interbreeding race with the Egyptian dynasties. Most of the other references to serpent people are part of the shared world Lovecraft encouraged fellow SF/horror/fantasy writers to write in. Robert Howard, of Conan fame, used subterranean serpent people a lot as antagonists, and Lovecraft's mentions are homages to Howard. Winter's Gifts is a novella set after Lies Sleeping, [10] published in June 2023. It follows FBI Agent Kimberley Reynolds, introduced in Whispers Underground, who has subsequently become an ally of the Folly.

Lies Sleeping will prove to be extremely appealing to huge range of people; not only pre-existing fans of the series but also those readers who have not read any of the Rivers of London books before. As a first-time Aaronovitch reader, I found that it was incredibly easy to step in and enjoy this series, as the author did a fantastic job making Lies Sleeping accessible to everyone. While Aaronovitch has created a huge amount of lore around his series, including in his novellas and comics, the reader does not need to have any knowledge of these or the previous six books in the series to fully understand the entirety of Lies Sleeping’s story. However, those readers who do have experience with this series will love how the story continues to development, as well as the massive and surprising twists that occur throughout the book.
An issue I’m having with series is the proliferation of magic practitioners and “Falcon Events”. Earlier in the series use and abuse of magic was a State Secret. The cover-up was extreme and effective. The Sub rosa existence of magic has been a fave part of the series' world building to me. With this book, it’s obvious that hundreds of folks in and outside of the Met are aware of it. How can this have escaped the notice of the media? Especially, with the bloodless carnage, fire and smoke that Aaronovitch wreaks inside The City with this story? The Hanging Tree is definitely one of the best in the Grant/Aaronovitch pantheon. There again, so have most of the previous books in the series and the odds are the next one probably will be too. (The Bookbag) Would be interesting sci-fi. Scary Ravenmasters invade from parallel world. They come with terrible soldiers and slaves - semi-sapient descendants of wolves and big cats. And, to make things worse, Ravenmasters are adept in spreading divisions and manipulating humanity to their goals...
