About this deal

The difference between a 6-pin, 8-pin, and 12-pin GPU cable all comes from the current they carry. Can you run a single high-end GPU off a daisy chain PCIe connectors?

GPU Power Connectors Explained [Simple Answer] - GPU Mag GPU Power Connectors Explained [Simple Answer] - GPU Mag

It looks like it has 17 amps (204 watts) available for the GPU. Rather disappointed that they didn't use a 6+2 cable for this PSU. The PSU should supply you with the power that you need to run your system, (at least what you've told us of it) (hint, hint, fill out your system specs) but Seasonic may have limited your ability to do so with the connectors provided. W1zzard tested a RX-570 4GB and it maxed out at 180 watts. If you subtract the 75 watts that the card can pull through the PCI-e slot, that still leaves 105 watts to come through that 75 watt rated 6 pin. I have no idea if Seasonic has over current protection on those connectors. From your 6-pin, you will get 75 watts of power, and the 8-pin PCIe cable will draw another 150 watts additionally. Six pin- 8Pin adapter cables usually are for top-notch GPUs. Thus, if your PSU doesn’t have an 8-pin connector to support your high-ranking GPU, you can utilize a 6-pin to 8-pin PCIe adapter. 4. 2x 8-Pin To 12-Pin PCI-E Adapter Cable PCIe x16 also has different types of slots available in the motherboard. A true PCIe x16 slot always comes with 1×16 lanes in the motherboard and will offer you 16-bit data transfer per cycle. However, budget motherboards have 2 x 8 lanes of PCIe slots to offer eight-lane bandwidth. What Is A 6-Pin GPU Cable? Also make sure, if you can, that each PCIe 6-pin power cable originates from separate power rails/power outputs.

This can be particularly confusing when using a multi-GPU setup, as with the SLI. In that case, the power requirement is the sum of two (or more) connected graphics cards. An 8 pin doesn't "supply" 150w... A GPU can pull 150w via an 8 pin connector, if it needs that much. A non reference RX480 may use slightly more than than the 75w 6-pin connector, but it is unlikely to be the full 150w. However, you should never mistake connecting a 6-pin connector to an 8-pin slot. Usually, the six-pin GPU cable is only rated to draw 75 watts of power. But when you connect it to an 8-pin connector, it will attempt to draw more power, with the efficiency of an 8-pin connector. This will eventually create a fire hazard and lead to the breakdown of your system. But I suppose it begs the question, assuming my PSU is "standard", i.e. not a massive 1200w gaming jobby with 45A on each line but a "normal" PSU, why would AIB manufacturers need to move to an 8 pin connector with two more neutrals? The new-age graphics card consumes much power and demands a higher supply from direct external sources. So, you should upgrade your PSUs to deliver GPUs the power requirement they want.

There are even some exceptional cases where the GPU will have two 8-pin connectors. By adding the numbers together, we get a total of 375 watts, which is an extreme amount. In addition, you still need to power the CPU ( another big energy consumer) and the rest of your PC’s components. The 8-pin is good for running the whole PC system. Therefore, if you’re upgrading from RTX 3070 to 3080, then 650 watts is enough. Does ATX 12V need to be plugged in? The reason why NVIDIA uses 12-pin GPU cables is to offer more power to the GPUs along with consistent cooling. The new 12-pin GPU cables are more compact and take the same size as an 8-pin. This saves you space and allows more cooling inside the next-generation graphics system. You should use a dual PCIe 6-pin to single 8-pin PCIe cable because a PCIe 6-pin power cable only delivers 75 watt, whereas a PCIe 8-pin power cable can deliver up to 150 watt, that is why you need two PCIe 6-pin power supply cables to "create" one PCIe 8-pin power supply connector:
